Let's See How the Game is Running
Published on March 27, 2005 By ScottTykoski In Bug Reports

Since we are in the 1st Phase of the Beta process, which we've sectioned off for perfomance testing and tweaking, I wanted to get a shout-out from you guys about how fast the game is actually running.

To get the game to show your 'Framerate' window, just make a shortcut to the EXE, then in the shortcut's properties window, set " framerate" to the Target field.

Now, when you boot up the game, you should have a nice little number (that hopefully hovers around 30) in your upper left hand corner.

What we're looking for is the highest and lowest framerate in 3 key places...

1. The Title Screen: This is a very bare-bones screen...it'll give us a good 'best case scenerio' for your machine.

2.  The Main Map: Scroll the map around.  Zoom out until you almost reach "tactical mode", this should be help get your lowest framerate.  Zoom all the way in to a part of the map with now planets or ships - this should help get your highest frame rate.

3. The Ship Design Screen: For some reason certain machines have has clunkiness problems with this guy in the past.  Make sure a medium hull is selected Toggle hardpoints on for your lowest framerate. Then bring up a small hull with hardpoints toggled off (use the lower left button on the camera controls) for your high framerate.

Also, if any of your framerates drop below 25, it'd be a great help if you could peek in debug.err and post out your system specs!

I'll get us started.

******************************

Title Screen: 39.0 - 39.8 fps
Main Map: 32.2 - 37.5 fps
Ship Design: 27.9 - 37.5fps

(And even though I didn't drop below 25 I'll still post my home specs)

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs)
Physical Memory: 1022MB RAM
Card Name: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200
Display Memory: 128.0 MB
Current Display Mode: 1280 x 1024 (32 bit) (75Hz)

******************************

So it looks like my home machine runs it pretty well.  However, I'll be testing the FPS again once we get 50 fleets of ships in the window at once..that may be a bit more painful than 1 colony and 1 survey ship

Thanks in advance for anyone that takes the time to do this

The game is very smooth! No problems with performance at all!

I do suffer from a few CDTs during play and hard-locks when loading saved games though.

framerate is good on my laptop, ati radeon 9200 (64mg), 3gx p4, 1gb ram. Framerate not really below 40, even got some 100's on the title and main map. This was in windowed mode.

i'm tending to find that my fps vary a lot from game to game, boogiebac (not that i get far without 'colony crashing' these days- seems to have got worse the more i try to play!) also, my main slowness on the main screen doesn't come at max zoom-in but rather around the middle, where the 3d view is maximised, so to speak. i have seen fps rates as slow as 6-7 on some screen changes

Here we go... I think I must have vsync on somewhere, I will have to check that out... I got constant 85 FPS everywhere... only time it when below was when I first loaded into a new menu and it went to maby 25(lowest menu) in the ship yard.

Comp specs:
AMD 3400+ 64bit
Windows XP 64bit... it works fine
786mb RAM
ATi 9600 PRO
WD SATA 7200RPM HD...
on Mar 27, 2005
Haha... disabled vsync...

In main menu I get 450 FPS... it spiked at 800 for about a second.
Zooming out full at star of game I got 175... then zomming into nothing I got 180
Ship yard I got 170-190, stabalizing at 190.

I'm wondering if running 64bit windows is giving me a huge advantage here.

Ohh yea, running at:
DisplayWidth=1024
DisplayHeight=768
ColorDepth=32

Evil Roy, this is off topic but in answer to your colony crashing - I fixed the problem by turning on 'Show Grid" - I have no idea why it seems to have made a difference but it has...
on Mar 27, 2005
thanx wydom@ker! have you made that 'fix' an email we can bump for everyone else?

My specs even though I'm not below 25:

XP Home SP2
P4 2.8 ghz
1 gig RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 meg w/ latest drivers
1152x864 at 32 bit, 85 hz

Title: A steady 85.
Main: High of 85, low of 67 at the zoom just before tactical map.
Ship Design: Medium with hardpoints - 81 Small with no hardpoints - 85
on Mar 27, 2005
Mainscreen 59.9
Mapscreen 55-60
Shipscreen 45-60

3.0 Mghz Pentium CPU
1 Gig of RAM
ATI Radeon 9600 128 megs RAM
Running at whatever the standard resolution the game is in

Most of the time the game is hovering just short of 60fps, only drops initially when switching to a screen or doing something within a screen. Runs very smoothly.

My turn.

Title: 58 - 60 (switching screens it drops to 58, but then raises and stays at 60)
Main: 29 - 60
Ship Design: 42.2 - 60

My Specs:

P4 2.66 GHZ
512 MB RAM
Geforce 4 Ti 4200 with 8x AGP (latest drivers 71.84)
1024x768 at 32 bit
Windows XP Pro SP2
Direct X 9.0c

*On a side note* I found a bug while messing around in the ship design screen. For more info click the Link
